What size should I take?

True to size. It is cut loose with a dropped shoulder, so your usual size already gives you the oversized line. Size up only if you want it longer in the body.
Do I need a shirt under it?

No — that is the whole point of the collar. A tee underneath works if you want a second layer, but the lapel is doing the dressing on its own.
Is it warm enough on its own?

It is a mid-weight knit, so it carries fall and mild winter on its own and layers under a coat when it drops. It is a sweater, not a jacket.
Which one, the stripes or the solids?

The solids sit quietly with everything you own. The stripes are the ones people ask about — and they are the reason it reads intentional from across a room.
Does the zip go all the way down?

No, it is a quarter zip. It opens at the throat to fold the lapel back and closes to the collar when you want it shut. It is not a full-zip cardigan.
