What’s included

With every order:

  • One hood, in the color you choose
  • 30 days to change your mind: an exchange or store credit
  • A real person who answers within one business day
Description

A knit hood with no band around your head.

One piece of knit: a soft, roomy hood that covers your head and ears and frames your face, then a short cape that covers your neck and tucks inside your coat collar. Two knit ties in the same color come out at the front and knot under your chin. That knot is what keeps it up, so nothing grips around your head.

What you are getting

  • A roomy hood that frames your face: forehead, cheeks and chin stay clear
  • A short cape, knit in one piece with the hood, made to tuck inside a coat collar
  • Two knit ties, ends knotted, no metal tips
  • No band, no lining, no logo
  • Two knits: ribbed in Cream, Taupe and Brick, brushed and fuzzier in Slate, Black and Coffee
  • One size, adjustable with the ties

Perfect for the walk to work in your good coat · a coat or a jacket that came without a hood · the school run and the dog walk · the days you did your hair · a gift for your mother, your sister or your best friend.

Size & fit

One size. There is no head size to guess. The hood is roomy, and the two ties set how close it sits under your chin.

How to wear it: pull the hood on and set it back off your forehead, let your hair fall out in front, then knot the ties under your chin, close or loose. Tuck the short cape inside your coat, under the collar.

Over what? A wool coat, a teddy coat, a canvas jacket or a chunky sweater. The cape is short: it covers your neck and tucks under your collar.

If it isn’t right, you have 30 days to change your mind: an exchange or store credit.

Materials & care

Knit

A mostly polyester knit, unlined. Cream, Taupe and Brick are a ribbed knit. Slate, Black and Coffee are a brushed knit with a fuzzier surface.

Ties

Two knit ties in the same color as the hood, ends knotted. No metal, no hardware.

Care

Check the care label. Like most knits, it does best washed by hand in cold water and dried flat, away from a heater.

The New York Hood in Taupe worn under a navy coat, tied with one knot under the chin

No band. One knot.

A beanie stays on by gripping your head, and your hair takes the squeeze. This hood has no band at all. It rests over your hair and ears, and one knot under your chin keeps it up. Tie it close on a windy corner, loose on a mild morning.

  • No elastic band around your head
  • Two knit ties under the chin, ends knotted
  • Nothing to adjust but the knot
  • Your hair can fall out in front, over your coat
The New York Hood in Slate tucked inside a camel wool coat, like the coat's own hood

The hood your coat never had.

The wool coat you love probably came without a hood. This one meets it at the collar. The knit runs from the hood into a short cape that tucks inside your coat, under the lapels, so from a step away it reads like the coat’s own hood.

  • Hood and cape knit in one piece
  • The cape tucks under your collar and covers your neck
  • Over a wool coat, a teddy coat, a canvas jacket or a sweater
  • One knot, and it’s on
The New York Hood in Brick under a cream coat, ties hanging, in a morning coffee line

Not a scarf. Not a ski mask.

We’d rather say it now. The neck part is a short cape, not a scarf with long ends, and the hood frames your face instead of covering it. It’s made for the city: the walk to work, the school run, the line for coffee.

  • Set the hood back off your forehead, hair out in front
  • Knot the ties under your chin, or let them hang
  • It folds into your bag once you’re inside
  • Six colors, from Cream to Coffee

Try it on at home first.

Put it on with the coat you’ll really wear it with, knot the ties and look in the mirror.

If the color isn’t right, email us. A person answers within one business day, and you choose an exchange or store credit for the full amount. Send it back unworn, with its tags and packaging.

Questions people ask before they buy

Will it fit my head?

It’s one size, with no band around your head to be too tight or too loose. The hood is roomy, the opening frames your whole face, and the two ties set how close it sits under your chin. If it isn’t right, exchange it within 30 days of delivery.

How do I keep it from looking old fashioned?

Wear it the way it’s shown here. Set the hood back off your forehead so it doesn’t close in around your face, let some hair fall out in front, and wear it with a long coat. Knotted loose with the ends hanging, it looks relaxed. Knotted close, it looks neat.

Will it flatten my hair?

There’s no band pressing around your head: the hood rests over your hair, and the knot under your chin holds it up. One honest note: the knit is unlined, so if you have tight curls that catch on knits, a satin lined hood will treat them better.

Is it itchy?

It’s a mostly polyester knit, and it’s unlined, so the knit touches your neck. If knits bother you on bare skin, wear it over a collar or a turtleneck. If it isn’t for you, you have 30 days to change your mind.

Is the neck part a scarf?

No. It’s a short cape, knit in one piece with the hood. It covers your neck and tucks inside your coat collar. There are no long ends to wrap, so if you want a big scarf, this isn’t it.

Does it cover my face?

No. The hood frames your face and leaves your forehead, cheeks and chin clear. It isn’t a ski mask: it’s made for walking around town in a coat.

Is it enough for real cold?

It covers your head, your ears and your neck in one layer of knit, and once it’s tied, the cape closes the gap at your collar. It’s made for city cold, the walk and the wait at the crosswalk, not for the slopes.

Which color should I pick?

Cream is a soft off-white, Taupe a light beige taupe, and Brick a brick red, deeper than a bright red. These three are a ribbed knit. Slate is a mid gray with a blue cast, Coffee a dark brown, and Black is black. These three are a brushed knit with a fuzzier surface. Cream shows marks first, Black and Coffee the least.

Buying it as a gift?

Easy: it’s one size, so there’s no size to guess. If she’d prefer another color, she can exchange it within 30 days of delivery, unworn and in its packaging. Buying early for the holidays? The 30 days start on delivery.

Can I return or exchange it?

Yes, within 30 days of delivery, unworn and in its packaging: an exchange for another color, or store credit for the full amount. Return shipping is on you. Anything that arrives damaged or defective is on us, and we won’t ask you to send it back.

That brick red against the charcoal coat!! Usually stick to neutrals but this might change my mind. Love the loose hair peeking out too, such an easy autumn look.

The cream knit and those little ties 🥹 so cute without trying too hard. Already imagining this with an oversized brown coat and a coffee in hand.
